following on from his release on beneath s mistry imprint, webstarr inaugurates his de grey label with a three-track collection of bass-flecked techno. opener we can t have nice things evokes punch drunk and the bristol sound as skittering beats deliver a two-step-like rhythm, propelled along by a synth melody that teases a potent breakdown. meanwhile warsaw bumps along with a brooding bassline that gives way to multi-layered percussion direct from an eastern bloc steel mill. closing track exit changes gear to play to the floor as a piercing kick and clap drum pattern combines with the subtlest of sub-bass and sharp synths that probe behind your eyes to lift the track effortlessly in a 2016 nod to detroit.

jann arrives on pinkman with a soundtrack of breathless panic, an ode to a blighted world of diesel fumes and indifference. rhythms are grizzly, gored and torn. thick chords judder, revving like a clapped-out engine as metal slashes at savaged snares. acid scorn is poured on this inhospitable world, amplified by the haze of distortion that clouds jann s hard and cold vision.

we dont have much info to give about vicram, partly because the artist doesn t want us to communicate the few things we know. but this is his first ep. its super raw - not necessarily rough. raw like a piece of sushi, an unpolished unvarnished beautiful piece of wood, raw like those bare drum machines and simple acid lines. almost naive, like those early 90s idm-techno record we cherish but with a very different angle. as usual, we liked vicram because we dont really understand how he makes his music.

�mind fiction�, kaczor s first release, comes with organic artwork such as a growing plant cover and simple yet sleek thai design inspired by a recent tour to southeast asia. the ep serves as a perfect example for kaczor s own artistic vision: moody textures and mellower grooves meeting his trademark raw and gritty, forceful attack-laden release of rolling drums, bass and percussion, pointing to kaczor s own roots in the more stormy outbacks of broken beats or uk bass. first track �balance� starts off with a softer, textured soundscape, nicely balancing melancholy synth waves and drum rattles into an atmospheric opener with a slowly oncoming and unfurling, melodic twist. the title track �mind fiction� more closely follows kaczors very own signature formula of a simple and driving bassline followed by an evocative build-up rushing into an emotional, cathartic breakdown. �asta� might be kazcor s most daring and trippy production to date: an intense mixture between hypnotic, hard hitting thumps and thunderous rolling drums taking the listener into the electrifying whirl of a night-time storm, where the tense and dense, humid atmosphere culminates in a monsoon-like rainfall of spiralling reverb � marking a fitting crescendo for this impressive debut on kaczor s now very own sonic ground.

goldmin founder romain lanteaume aka einka meets terrence dixon for a 2nd record which is nothing but a logical suite to the one released last year. this one is probably less deliberately dark but to us the edge was not dark at all, like what we tend to call melancholy isn t obviously a negative feeling. we believe there s no real duality between things and states. there s an incredible amount of degress in between. its always a bit more complex and deeper than the first impression!

in the early 1980s, nigerian was booming and recording studios used the oil money sloshing around to fit their studios with the latest state-of-the-art recording equipment. with the equipment came a new, slicker sound and a new breed of producers like lemmy jackson, jake sollo, tony okoroji and nkono teles who became bigger stars than the musicians they recorded. such was the fate of sony enang with don�t stop that music

the legendary west end records kick off 2017 with the a brand new re-edits series inviting like-minded producers with an underground thirst and a deep understanding of house & disco culture to collaborate on a very special project. first up, wolf music man medlar, applying his dancefloor know-how to west end�s rich archive of classic disco and boogie. hand picking four personal favourites, medlar reworks them perfectly for current club sets. picking out dub sections and skilfully reworking & extending them proving exactly why medlar has been such a draw to labels like delusions of grandeur and for discos only. �i put these edits together for myself and a few friends to play in our dj sets. west end was one of the key stepping stones to what would later become house music and for many is the definitive sound of early 80s new york. i d argue that it s aged better than any other label of that era and if you re relatively new to the label or know it inside out, the catalogue can likely still provide something new.� these four sublime new edits from medlar showcase his passion for digging deep, knowledge of house history and skills as a producer.

luciano continue his newly launched basaec imprint with * saved & slaved*, a two-track release featuring collaboration with argenis brito. swiss-chilean producer and dj luciano has been at the forefront of underground electronic music for quite some time now, heading up the infamous cadenza imprint and releasing material for some of the industry�s leading labels such as perlon, desolat, cocoon and poker flat amongst many others. here we see luciano back on his recently launched basaec label, delivering some of his signature stripped-back, dynamic and emotive material �lost in lymbo� takes the lead and sees luciano offer up a typically intricate twelve-minute excursion with subtly modulating and evolving percussion, spiralling synth swells, sporadic vocal chants and a smoothly unfolding aesthetic resulting in an archetypal and intriguing production from this forever forward-thinking artist. the latter half sees luciano paired with fellow cadenza artist argenis for �pato�s track�, stripping back the vibe to a raw cowbell and rim shot percussive-led state whilst lumpy subs, vocal murmurs and subtly unfolding flute like melodies ebb and flow throughout the composition.

live from concrete island is the debut album from brighton based producer stephen maskell, aka the nags head. taking material from the last four years, he s created a head-spinning tapestry of melodic techno and crushed cityscapes. like echospace, maskells destroyed visions nail the feeling of being a stranger in a strange land. for the city s lolloping, dubby percussion we reach deep into its guts, pulling out a squiggly bricolage of pistons, pool balls, window frames, jets of steam. in turns rasping and narcotic, concrete island s beatless sections are akin to the crunching menace of early clark, or murcofs cosmic space treatments. an occasional shimmer guitar pop gem emerges from the rubble.

�ld fantasy tracks� is made up of bittersweet melodies, bumpy bass lines and wonky old samplers and is punctuated by coloured drum sounds. these 6 tracks serve as a journey into melodic house and revel in the fantasy and spontaneity of the vibe. as too smooth christ preaches, �it has to be a first-try thing�.

powder is an up-and-coming producer from tokyo who had put out only a couple of releases on born free and esp institute when resident advisor featured her on the monthly series breaking through this past august. inspired by her first visit to cocktail d amore in 2015, she was so enthralled by the atmosphere, she started working on an ep for the label capturing her experiences from the party. the way powder interprets sound is extremely personal and unique. the opener hip has a driving sensual groove with hints of acid, seasoned with a good amount of loons and a mysterious foggy melody while heart sounds like an italo disco aural translation of a shojo manga script for a fun in the sun tinged story. on the flip side a slowmo industrial-meets-rainforest groove characterizes hole followed by hair in which she blends many layers of rhythm patterns together.

san francisco based dj al lover�s list of collaborations contain names like the brian jonestown massacre, goat and white fence, and he has remixed bands like the night beats and thee oh sees. except from producing mind-altering music, al lover is also the official dj of levitation and tours europe extensively.

launch of their self-production label, the trio drmc formed by monkey coops & only slave nation, released this first opus produced on a complete rhythmic basis accompanied by acid atmospheres. remixed by reda dare, spearhead of this new french house scene, this 1st opus clearly sounds like a bomb of the dancefloors. rolling bass, prominent percussion and hypnotic atmosphere will perfectly sum up the 1st ep of the label def raw music concept.

the totality of the many in one: cologne tape, an on and off gathering band from all over the world, did not call their second album welt without reason. the collective incorporates the nucleus of the label magazine and consists of the artists ada, barnt, jens-uwe beyer, jörg burger, john harten, philipp janzen, mario katz, john stanier and axel willner. all members live scattered between berlin, cologne and hamburg. they meet rarely and abruptly, but each of them always has the feeling that something relevant needs to be done. the ensemble�s name represents a city and the musical recordings that are made in it.their -rst release, -render-, marked the start of the label magazine in 2010 and found the way into dj sets by famed artists like dixon with music, which does not necessarily have the dancefloor in mind. subsequently, little, absolutely sublime pieces of cologne tape appeared in the public.

wotnot are proud to unveil another new exciting artist, songwriter/producer william florelle, who follows in the footsteps of previous debutantes like k15 (who features here), glenn astro, deft and many other now established (or quickly establishing) artists. the will flo project aims to deliver unique collaborations with each output, evolving to suit the combined inspiration of william and his collaborators. while he names a staggering variety of musical styles among his influences, this release takes the form of a highly swung, left-field r&b, with jazz and afro-beat influences. think 22a with more pronounced r&b flavours.

untamed love is an ufo in peter hunnigale�s career, recorded at omega studio (london) and originally released on the cosmic label in 1986. some people have no words to describe it. you can call it brit boogie, rare funk, sick jam, musical bomb, or god jam, whatever it�s typical mid 80 s tune with a rythmic backgound sound that is captivating and memorable, thanks to heavyweight synth and awesome vocal. the original 12�� vinyl record is still very hard to find and expensive nowadays. if you are about to discover this song, make sure you are sit down when you listen to it because this song will blow you down « hey girl i like the way you smile ».

when words fail, music has the ability to depict the deepest of human emotions and once again kidnap kid uses his signature emotive and sophisticated production to do just that. he returns to birds that fly, the label he founded less than a year ago with brokenhearted an ep containing two original tracks. brokenhearted is a reaction to the immense sadness in the world. my way of processing endless tragedy and distant despair. mist, on the other hand, is a more hopeful response, a faraway light at the end of the tunnel - kidnap kid. musicians have been making music about love and heartbreak for hundreds of years and kidnap kid�s statement on the eternally relevant topic starts with brokenhearted ,a track that taps into the memory vaults. next up is mist whose simple melody is layered over intricate sounds to create an immensely absorbing track. the start of 2016 saw kidnap kid launch his birds that fly imprint as a platform for his own music as well as a means to support like minded producers, such as applebottom and amtrac, both releasing on the label with great success. the labels debut release was from kidnap kid himself and moments was met with such high acclaim it collectively reached 10 million streams, 1.3 million of those coming from spotify and subsequently made the spotify chart in over 10 countries. it was championed by several radio 1 djs and was the closing record for many, including maceo plex who closed his set at crssd festival with the track.

welcome to season five of the jazz jousters sessions. after four years of non stop album releases we thought we d take a few months time out to think and work out what we would do next this season. we decided to attempt another locations series since we are yet to take on some of the locations many of you have suggested via our updates pages and emails. so here we go...
mjm would like to present locations: usa, the vinyl and cassette edition as we continue to explore the sounds, influences and styles of jazz music in different regions of the world.
in this session we hear the result of each jouster as they each chose one or more jazz musicians from the united states and began to work with that sound and come up with an instrumental in their own style, just like in season four. however there was a twist, this time they were challenged to focus on jazz between the years of 1960 to 1969. see what you think of the outcome...
